Report: Pacers fan yelled “Cancun on 3” before Patrick Beverley threw a ball into the stands twice

Patrick Beverley is a loser. He gave everyone plenty of examples on Thursday night beyond anything that happened on the court where he made just 3 of 11 shots for 6 points in 40 minutes.

First, with the game and series nearly over, Beverley got into it with some Pacers fans behind the Milwaukee Bucks bench. He threw a ball into the crowd and hit a woman who wasn’t even looking in his direction in the side of the head with the throw. If that wasn’t bad enough, because Beverley missed his intended target, he asked for the ball back. A Pacers fan tossed him the ball gently and Beverley immediately threw it back as hard as he could. A bizarre moment that while unprofessional and classless at first glance, makes you wonder what the fan could have done to warrant that level of hostility from the veteran guard.

Turns out, Patrick Beverley can’t take a joke and a perfectly acceptable heckle. According to the Athletic’s Shams Charania, the incident started with a fan shouting, “Cancun! Cancun on 3!” as the Bucks were finishing up their huddle.

When asked about it after the game, Beverley said it was “nothing.” It seems obvious why he didn’t want to share anything about it when it was a clear overreaction and an unacceptable response that will likely warrant a multiple-game suspension to start next season.

Fair to the viewer, we could hear a lot of one Pacers fan heckles during the game. While not the same fan, these were some top tier, good-natured, inoffensive heckling:

  • “Portis, your eyes are slightly too big for your head.”
  • “Gallinari, you need a haircut.”
  • “Dame, your tattoos are only decent.”
  • “Khris, I respect your game but I hope you miss.”

Just quality material throughout the first half from the fan behind the TNT broadcast team.

To make matters even worse, Beverley also refused to allow a long-time ESPN producer to be a part of his media scrum because she doesn’t subscribe to his podcast. Yes, you read that correctly. He would not allow her to hold a microphone during his media time because she doesn’t subscribe to his podcast.

Apparently, he’s done the same to the Milwaukee media since being traded to the Bucks in the middle of the season. It’s disappointing that the reporters there in the moment didn’t stand up for her or simply walk away after Beverley did this.

Multiple media members came to the reporter/producer’s defense on Twitter, calling out the Bucks guard’s behavior. Beverley eventually called her to apologize.

Adam Silver needs to go “belt 2 ass” on Patrick and make an example of this classless behavior.

Beverley had plenty of trash talk during the series after the two Bucks wins claiming a reporter asking him a question could get 10 assists if they had the ball as much as Tyrese Haliburton but couldn’t take any talk after losing the series. Pretty clear who the real front-runner was in the series, eh Bobby Portis? The irony of his too small gesture only grows as we see how minuscule his character measures up.

Update: The incident with Beverley and the fan(s) is now being investigated by the Indianapolis police according to Shams Charania. It’s unclear what the intent of the investigation is, if Beverley is being investigated for assault or if the fan is the party being looked at for possible criminal conduct. Beverley claimed on his podcast that it was much more than just Cancún on 3 that was said to him before the throwing of the ball though he declined to share exactly what was said.
